DESCRIPTION:Natalia Serna (Stanford University)\nBiography: Natalia Serna\, PhD\, is an Assistant Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University. Her research studies how insurer and provider competition shapes health plan design and patient health outcomes\, using tools from industrial organization and causal inference. One strand of her work examines provider network design\, insurer-provider contracting\, and the government regulation of insurers; a second explores how competition affects patient outcomes like mortality\, fertility\, and breast cancer screening. \nSegmentation in Pharmaceutical Markets: Evidence from Contraceptives\nAbstract: Pharmaceutical markets are often divided between over-the-counter (OTC) and health insurance segments. This paper shows that segmentation of this kind dampens pharmaceutical demand by softening product competition and raising prices relative to a pooled market\, an effect amplified by information frictions about drug quality. Our setting is the hormonal contraceptive market in Colombia\, where a price ceiling policy generates variation that allows us to separately identify price sensitivity\, preferences for quality\, and information frictions. Using a structural model\, we find that when product variety is held fixed\, moving to an OTC-only market would raise contraceptive demand by 8% and reduce fertility by 0.7 births per woman. However\, when manufacturers eliminate redundant products\, moving to an OTC-only market would reduce demand by 2% and raise fertility by 0.2 births per woman.  Effects are qualitatively similar when moving to an insurance-only market.

SUMMARY:Emily Smith-Greenaway\, USC\, "Despair of deaths? Exploring the childhood cost of early adult mortality"
DESCRIPTION:Emily Smith-Greenaway (USC)\n\n\n\nEmily Smith-Greenaway is Dean’s Professor of Sociology and Professor of Spatial Sciences at the University of Southern California. Her research seeks to infuse social-psychological perspectives into demography to advance how we quantify and theorize key population processes and how we study them in cause and consequence. Much of her work focuses on studying the levels\, patterning\, and consequences of bereavement. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and has appeared in demography\, sociology\, and general science journals including Annual Review of Sociology\, Demography\, Population and Development Review\, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\, and Social Forces.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Despair of deaths? Exploring the childhood cost of early adult mortality\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe United States has experienced worsening mortality trends in recent years\, principally due to the rise in midlife mortality. Middle-aged adults are often the parents of dependent-aged children\, raising questions about the consequences that these early adulthood deaths portend for the next generation. In this talk\, I present findings from a series of papers studying the levels and consequences of parental death using Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study data—a study featuring an urban sample of racial and ethnic minorities disproportionately born to unmarried parents. By exploring the linkages between parental death and outcomes across various life domains\, the results offer a comprehensive assessment of the potential for parental death to be a cause\, not only a consequence\, of despair.

DESCRIPTION:Jake Anderson (UCLA\, Economics)\nJake Anderson is a PhD candidate in Economics at UCLA and an affiliate of the California Center for Population Research\, where he held a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) T32 traineeship in 2024-2025. His research is in the economics of crime\, with work in progress on peer effects and criminal capital transmission in jails\, parole eligibility reform\, and the effects of communication costs on incarcerated populations. Much of his empirical work depends on large-scale automated data collection\, including scraping infrastructure built to run correspondence studies or scrape public information from government portals and websites. \nBefore entering the doctoral program he spent nearly a decade in industry in various roles including software engineer\, manager\, and director\, most recently as an Applied Scientist at Uber and previously as a Data Science Manager at Moloco\, a “decacorn” performance marketing startup\, where he led a team of 25 data scientists. He holds an MA in Statistics from the University of California\, Berkeley and a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of California\, Irvine\, and has applied AI-assisted workflows to large-scale research and engineering projects in both industry and academic settings. \n  \nAdversarial Agents: Managing AI Research Assistants with Claude Code\nAbstract: Used carelessly\, LLMs and AI agents may be adversarial: they hallucinate sources\, cut corners\, become “lazy\,” and in the worst case fabricate results. Researchers bring deep domain knowledge and sharp questions to these tools\, but an academic career rarely includes experience managing a large team. At the current stage of the technology\, that management skill is precisely what allows a researcher to harness the power of frontier tools. This workshop introduces a framework for giving agents the context\, purpose\, and accountability they require\, so that research time is spent on research rather than on debugging\, formatting tables\, and other tedious parts of the work. \nThe session covers the components of Claude Code most relevant to a research workflow\, beginning with basic features such as planning mode and context management and building toward custom personas\, agents\, and skills. In particular\, the workshop presents a model of “Adversarial Agents\,” a strategy for assigning permissions and roles so that agents check one another’s work and hold each other to the instructions they were given. \nThe session is hands-on. Participants build and leave with a set of components configured for their own work: custom agent personas\, reusable skills\, and project-level instructions covering research and administrative workflows\, including literature ingestion and summarization and data cleaning and replication auditing. Participants should bring a laptop.

DESCRIPTION:Felicia Knaul\, UCLA\nDr. Felicia Marie Knaul is the associate of the chancellor at UCLA\, a distinguished professor of medicine\, and a senior advisor to both the dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine and the president of UCLA Health\, and director of global health of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is internationally recognized for her transformative research in global health\, health systems and health economics. Before coming to UCLA\, Dr. Knaul served as director of the Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas and director of the Office of Hemispheric and Global Affairs at the University of Miami\, and was a professor at the university’s Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Knaul previously served as director of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative and associate professor at Harvard Medical School. She earned a master’s and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University\, and her bachelor’s in international development from the University of Toronto.\n\nDr. Knaul maintains an active presence in Mexico\, where she serves as president of Tómatelo a Pecho\, the nonprofit she founded. Tómatelo a Pecho originally focused on breast cancer but has now expanded its mandate to include women’s health and health system strengthening. She has published two books chronicling her own cancer journey. Dr. Knaul is an elected member of the Mexican National Academy of Medicine\, inducted Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and Honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She served as co-chair of the Lancet Commission on Global Access to Palliative Care and Pain Relief and currently co-chairs two commissions on violence against women and children and cancer and health systems.
