DESCRIPTION:Felicia Marie Knaul\, UCLA\nDr. Felicia Marie Knaul is the associate of the chancellor at UCLA\, a distinguished professor of medicine\, and a senior advisor to both the dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine and the president of UCLA Health\, and director of global health of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is internationally recognized for her transformative research in global health\, health systems and health economics. Before coming to UCLA\, Dr. Knaul served as director of the Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas and director of the Office of Hemispheric and Global Affairs at the University of Miami\, and was a professor at the university’s Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Knaul previously served as director of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative and associate professor at Harvard Medical School. She earned a master’s and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University\, and her bachelor’s in international development from the University of Toronto.\n\nDr. Knaul maintains an active presence in Mexico\, where she serves as president of Tómatelo a Pecho\, the nonprofit she founded. Tómatelo a Pecho originally focused on breast cancer but has now expanded its mandate to include women’s health and health system strengthening. She has published two books chronicling her own cancer journey. Dr. Knaul is an elected member of the Mexican National Academy of Medicine\, inducted Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and Honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She served as co-chair of the Lancet Commission on Global Access to Palliative Care and Pain Relief and currently co-chairs two commissions on violence against women and children and cancer and health systems.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeasuring the Unmet Need for Palliative Care: A Step Toward Closing the Global Pain Divide\n\n\nMore than 74 million people need palliative care\, 80% of them in low- and middle-income countries\, yet nearly all opioid pain relief goes to high-income countries. Dr. Felicia Marie Knaul presents two measures of this global pain divide\, serious health-related suffering (SHS) and distributed opioids in morphine equivalent (DOME)\, and discusses what it would take to close the divide.

SUMMARY:Nadia Kim\, Texas A&M University\, "How LA’s Immigrants\, Namely Women\, Fight Environmental Injustice By Way of The Embodied Community"
DESCRIPTION:Nadia Kim\, Texas A&M University\n \n\n\n\nNadia Y. Kim is the George Sumey Jr Professor in the Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University (Department of Sociology). Her research focuses on US race and citizenship hierarchies concerning Korean/Asian Americans and South Koreans\, race and nativist racism in Los Angeles (e.g.\, 1992 LA Unrest)\, environmental (in)justice\, immigrant women\, comparative racialization of Asian and Black Americans and Latinx groups\, and race theory. Dr. Kim has written two multi-award-winning books\, Refusing Death: Immigrant Women and the Fight for Environmental Justice in LA (Stanford\, 2021) and Imperial Citizens: Koreans and Race from Seoul to LA (Stanford\, 2008)\, lead edited Disciplinary Futures: Sociology in Conversation with American\, Ethnic\, and Indigenous Studies (NYU\, 2023)\, and (co)authored articles for journals like Social Forces\, Social Problems\, and International Migration Review. She and/or her work have been featured by Red Table Talk\, National and Southern California Public Radio\, Radio Korea\, The Washington Post\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\, (MS)NBC News\, The Korea Times\, and NYLON Magazine.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nHow LA’s Immigrants\, Namely Women\, Fight Environmental Injustice By Way of The Embodied Community: A Meditation on Methods & Findings\nIn recent decades\, marginalized and unauthorized immigrants\, especially mothers\, are increasingly making political inroads by way of grassroots community activism.  Drawing on four years of ethnography\, interviews\, and documents involving mostly Filipina Asian and Mexican Latina Environmental Justice activists in port-industrial Los Angeles\, this movement is much more than an effort to spare more children and neighbors from becoming asthmatic or cancerous or to seek better healthcare for them.  Immigrant activists see the diesel and oil refinery pollution in America’s largest urban oil field as a battle against the (nativist) racism and classism that they deem responsible for over-polluting their embodied communities – the minoritized and impoverished collectives that embody the love\, joy\, pollution\, and sickness of their neighborhoods. In response\, they contest a system they deem physically and emotionally violent and neglectful.  A major focus of this talk is how I conducted the data collection and methodology for this study by way of participant ethnography\, in-depth interviewing\, and documents analysis and from an approach that centers feminism\, intersectionality\, and participatory research.
