Requirements for a CCPR Certificate in Training in Demography and Population Studies

The UCLA California Center for Population Research will award a Certificate in Training in Demography and Population Studies to CCPR Student Affiliates who meet all of the following requirements:

CCPR Seminar Series

In two academic years, attend most of the CCPR seminars (defined as a minimum of 15 per academic year). The CCPR seminar meets on Wednesdays from noon to 1:30p.m., weeks 1 to 10 of the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.

CCPR Proseminar Series

In two academic years, participate in a minimum of six pro-seminars (each academic year) with the CCPR seminar speaker. The pro-seminar meets on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

CCPR Developmental and Methods Workshops

In two academic years, participate in a minimum of six developmental or methods workshops (each academic year). The workshops are typically held on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. A different time slot might be used occasionally to accommodate an outside speaker.

PAA Participation

Attend the Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America (PAA) at least once.

Courses

Student Affiliates must complete at least four graduate courses (at least 16 units) as follows:

• One Demographic Techniques I: Measuring Demographic Processes (Biostat M208, CHS M208, Econ M208, Sociology M213A)
• Three elective courses. These courses can be chosen from the list below. Students can also petition to have other courses approved as alternative eligible electives.

Labor Economics (Economics 261A & 261B)

Methods in Policy Evaluation (Economics 262A)

Topics in Labor Economics (Economics 262P)

Family and Social Change (Sociology 205)

Applied Event History Analysis (Sociology 213B)

Introduction to Theory and Major Empirical Research in Social Demography (Sociology 226A and 226B)

International Migration (Sociology 236A, 236B or 236C)

Stratification, Inequality and Mobility (Sociology 239A, 239B)
