Michigan State University: Assistant/Associate Professor in Sociology

The Department of Sociology at Michigan State University seeks candidates for a 9-month tenure-system position in the Sociology of Health and Medicine at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning August 16, 2016. We seek candidates with a research focus on health issues, such as mental health, physical conditions, mortality, health disparities, and health care service. A Ph.D. in Sociology or related field is required by the date of appointment. Candidates must display potential for and/or evidence of excellence in research. Also, candidates must display potential for and/or evidence of external grant support for their research.


The Department of Sociology has identified the Sociology of Health and Medicine as one of its core areas of specialization and is committed to playing a leading role in the university’s emphasis on health and medicine. The successful candidate will have a 100% appointment in the Department of Sociology and will be expected to strengthen the Health and Medicine specialization through developing a well-defined research program, teaching, and engaging in department and university service and outreach. The successful candidate is also expected to cultivate connections with faculty in other specializations in the Department of Sociology: Community and Urban, Environment, Family, and Migration. With three medical colleges (Human, Osteopathic, and Veterinary), a College of Nursing, and a variety of health-related disciplines and units, Michigan State University is a leader in understanding all facets of human, community and environmental health.
