The Department of sociology, founded in 1954, offers a lively and collaborative research environment with a strong international research profile. The department is especially competitive in the areas of demography, ethnic relations and migration, gender, family sociology, social policy regimes, social networks and social stratification. Masters and doctoral programs offered at the department are taught in English and attract applicants from all over Europe. At present members of the department include doctoral students, post-docs and faculty from at least 10 different countries.
The department is also home to the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA), established in 1983, an international group of scholars and doctoral students, working on many facets of population dynamics. SUDA offers the only comprehensive demographic training in Sweden, and the unit is well connected with research schools throughout the world. As an acknowledgement of SUDA’s success, demography has officially been appointed a leading research area at Stockholm University.
The position entails teaching and supervision at Bachelor and Master level as well as own research. The Department employees are expected to participate in the institution’s internal work, including overall administrative tasks.
Department employees are also expected to actively seek external research funding, and create contacts with the national and international scientific community. The position includes at least 50% own research.
Eligible applicants for the position as Assistant Professor in sociology (Tenure-track position) should hold a PhD in Sociology or have equivalent research skills. Priority will be given in the first instance, to applicants who received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no more than seven years before the deadline for applications.
Teaching proficiency should be demonstrated through teaching experience at the undergraduate or master’s levels. Teaching expertise should be well-documented and in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.
The applicant must have the ability to cooperate with colleagues as well as other abilities that are required in order successfully to meet the demands of the position.
Special emphasis will be placed on: research skills demonstrated through scientific publications, primarily as articles in international peer-review journals, or books published by international publishers.
Strong emphasis will be placed on: teaching proficiency demonstrated through teaching experience at the undergraduate and master’s levels, a detailed research plan covering the employment period, a documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues and fellow researchers, proven collaboration with the surrounding society and dissemination of research and development findings.
Emphasis will be placed on: having successfully planned, applied for and obtained research project funds from external research funding bodies, administrative skills
It is a merit to have completed at least 7.5 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.

An applicant who does not have at least 7.5 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education, and is not deemed to have acquired equivalent knowledge, must complete such training within the first two years of employment.
Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement for the position, but the applicant has to be ready to take on administrative and pedagogical tasks that demand an understanding and usage of Swedish after two years of employment. Information about promotion to senior lecturer
Employment as an associate senior lecturer is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) (HF). The purpose of the position is to enable the associate senior lecturer to develop independence as a researcher and acquire the necessary qualifications for appointment to another more senior teaching position.
An associate senior lecturer at Stockholm University can apply for and ought to be promoted to senior lecturer for an indefinite term of employment if she or he meets the demands for promotion in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the Rules of Employment for the Recruitment and Promotion of Teachers at Stockholm University (AOSU) and, in addition, is deemed suitable based on the following criteria.
Qualification requirements for promotion from assistant professor to senior lecturer
A person wishing to be promoted to senior lecturer will have been awarded a PhD in Demography or possesses equivalent academic qualifications, and during the term of employment as associate senior lecturer will have demonstrated teaching proficiency, and demonstrated research skills by planning and conducting research that, in terms of quantity, quality and independence, meets at least 50% of the requirements for an Associate Professor
(Docent) (the PhD dissertation excluded). This is regardless of how far the holder of the position has come in fulfilling these requirements at the commencement of employment.
Teaching proficiency should be demonstrated through teaching experience at both the undergraduate and master’s levels. The teaching should be independently planned and carried out and, in terms of quantity and quality, meet the requirements for employment as senior lecturer. The teaching expertise should be well documented and in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.
The applicant must have the ability to cooperate with colleagues as well as other abilities that are required in order to successfully meet the demands of the position.
The applicant must have a documented ability to independently initiate and conduct research of high quality.
The applicant must have completed courses in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 7.5 credits, or be deemed to possess equivalent knowledge.
