Position and organization

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is seeking a Service Fellow to work in the Analytic Studies Branch of the Office of Analysis and Epidemiology. NCHS, located in Hyattsville, Maryland, is the principal health statistics agency in the United States, and its mission is to collect and compile accurate, relevant, and timely statistical information to guide actions and policies that improve the health of the American people. The Analytic Studies Branch is responsible for the production and dissemination of Health, United States, the annual report on the health of the nation, submitted by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to the President and the Congress of the United States. Now in its 38th year, Health, United States presents trend and current information on health status and determinants, health care utilization and access, health care resources, and health care expenditures. Fellowship overview

The Service Fellow will primarily be responsible for all aspects of preparing and disseminating NCHS’ flagship report, Health, United States, both in print and electronic form. Responsibilities focus on the planning and development of the varied analytic products contained in Health, United States. Duties include updating the approximate 120 report trend tables from over 35 different data systems; creating graphics and text for the report Chartbook that presents key health indicators for health risk factors, health status, health care utilization, and personal health care expenditures; and creating online data products for the Health, United States user community. The Service Fellow will also provide technical consultation and advice to data users and colleagues and prepare standard and specialized studies for NCHS reports and journal publications.

Qualifications

Applicants must have successfully completed a graduate degree in social sciences, health sciences, statistics, public health, or a related field (e.g., demography, public policy, or epidemiology). Coursework should include completion of at least 15 semester hours in statistics (or mathematics and statistics provided that at least 6 semester hours were in statistics) and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences, demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, health sociology, political science, public administration, or psychology.

The work requires strong analytic and statistical skills; experience using SAS, STATA, SUDAAN, or other statistical software for complex survey data; the ability to work effectively as a team player; orientation to detail; and strong speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills. This fellowship is open to all citizens of the United States or legal permanent residents with a work authorization. Applicants are responsible for obtaining the necessary work authorization.

Terms of appointment

The successful candidate will be offered an initial 24-month appointment with potential for an extension. A starting date will be determined by mutual agreement. An initial salary of $63,772–$99,296 will be offered based on skills, education, and experience. Salary increases will be commensurate with performance. Service Fellows are eligible for annual and sick leave, Thrift Savings 401(k)-equivalent, health and life insurance, and a flexible work schedule. The Fellow will have the option of free onsite parking or a public-transportation subsidy. The local subway station is within walking distance.
