Job Opening – MZES and Mannheim University School of Social Sciences
The Chair in Economic and Organizational Sociology and The Mannheim Center for European Social and Research (MZES) invite applications for a position as a Doctoral Researcher in the Areas of Economic Sociology and the Sociology of Labor Markets.
We are looking for outstanding candidates to fill a position as a doctoral research fellow/Ph.D. student in the social sciences, with an emphasis on economic sociology and the study of labor markets. The position is part of an interdisciplinary research project (funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation) on the evaluation of labor market policies, the dynamics of occupational careers and the labor market integration of immigrants. The principal investigators of the project are Prof. Henning Hillmann (Economic and Organizational Sociology, University of Mannheim) and Prof. Christina Gathmann (Labor Economics and New Political Economics, University of Heidelberg).
We are offering a dynamic research environment and the support to build an independent research agenda. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim (GESS), which offers, advanced Master/Ph.D. level courses in economics, sociology, political science and psychology.
The position will be based at the Mannheim Center for European Social Research (MZES). The MZES is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Mannheim dedicated to comparative European social research and the analysis of European integration processes. It is Germany’s largest university-based social-science research center. In addition to the resources of the University, MZES supports its researchers with a dedicated IT department, the internal methods consulting and data unit Eurodata, an extensive Center library, support from project management offices, and a public relations officer.
Candidates should hold an M.A. or equivalent degree in one of the social sciences (sociology, economics or neighboring disciplines). The position requires very good quantitative skills; practical experience with large and complex data sets is a plus. A sound command of English is required. Knowledge of German is a plus, but not required.
The full-time position is available for 3 years, and may be extended up to another 3 years contingent on the project’s renewal. The preferred starting date is 1 December 2015. The salary is set in accordance with the German public sector scale TV-L (E 13).
