The National Population Council of Mexico (CONAPO, for its Spanish acronym) and the Health Initiative of the Americas, a program of the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley (HIA-UC), School of Public Health, would like to invite you to participate in the 2019 “Migration and Health” report; an annual series published since 2008. The objective of these publications is to make current issues related to the health of the migrant population from the Mexico-United States corridor accessible to officials, academia, civil association, and the general public.

For the 2019 edition, the publication will consist of short articles selected by an internal HIA-UC and CONAPO committee. The selected articles will then be evaluated by an external, specialized binational editorial committee. During both evaluations, articles will be reviewed on previously established criteria, quality, and relevance.

Topics

The following topics, although not exclusive, have been identified as priorities within a migration framework:

1.   Mental Health

2.   Chronic Diseases

3.   Infectious Diseases

4.   Women’s Health

5.   Occupational Health

6.   Access to Health Care

7.   Violence from the Public Health Perspective

Process/Guidelines

  • Original manuscripts submitted for consideration can be written in English or Spanish, abiding by the content and format guidelines below.
  • The first review of the manuscript will be by an internal group composed of HIA-UC and CONAPO. An external bi-national editorial committee will conduct a second double blind peer review before a final decision is reached.
  • Final decisions can include that of acceptance, denial, or conditional based on suggestions by the editorial committee.
  • All accepted articles will have a pre-determined time-frame to revise based on the comments/observations of the editorial committee.
  • The final article will be translated to English or Spanish by the organizing committees for a bilingual publication.
  • Authors will be asked to provide a final review of their article proofs before publication.
  • There will be a maximum of three authors participating in each study.
  • Articles should be sent by March 31, 2018 to Stephany Pizano (stephany.pizano@berkeley.edu), and/or Alejandra Reyes Miranda (alejandra.reyes@conapo.gob.mx).

Manuscript Content Guidelines

1.   Summary (100 words)

2.   Introduction (½ page maximum)

  • Relevance for both countries
  • Significant statistics that justify the article
  • Brief description of the different article sections

3.   Background (maximum 1 page)

4.   Methodology (1 page maximum)

5.   Results, Discussion, and Analysis (4 pages maximum)

6.   Conclusion and Public Policy Recommendations (1½ pages maximum)

7.   References (1 page maximum)

8.   Co-authors information (¼ of a page maximum, will not count toward the 2,500-words)

Manuscript Format Guidelines

  • Use Microsoft Word (recent version)
  • Use the Microsoft Word Program for endnotes. Note- Do not manually number end notes
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 inch font size
  • Margins: 1 inch margins on the left, right, top and bottom of the paper
  • Maximum of 5,000 words (approximately 10 pages not including graphics or references)
  • A maximum of 3 graphic elements if needed
  • Save tables, illustrations, textboxes, etc. as separate archives- place their location within the text using brackets.
  • Can be received in Spanish or English. The edition will be bilingual.
