CCPR Demography Curriculum
CCPR Students obtain interdisciplinary training in population studies but fulfill the degree requirements of a selected major discipline. Most CCPR trainees are currently drawn from three academic departments: Economics and Sociology in the College of Letters and Science, and Community Health Sciences (CHS) in the School of Public Health. Although, CCPR’s curriculum focuses on these three disciplines, students typically choose courses from a variety of resources, in order to develop a broad-based knowledge of demography and related areas, such as fertility and family planning, health, or the environment.
In Sociology doctoral students specializing in demography are required to take Social Demography (SOC 226A/B) and two quarters of Demographic Techniques (SOC 213A and either 213B or 213C). In Economics doctoral students take required courses in demography, such as Economic Population and Demography (ECON 262) and either demographic methods or labor economics during their second year. For CHS the required courses include Social Demography (SOC 226A/B), Fertility and Methods (CHS M222), and Demographic Methods (SOC 213A). Generally students are most engaged in the research process during years two through four, as the first year typically involves acclimatization in graduate school and required coursework.
